Artist's Description
Birches in Acadia National Park. This is the first digital photograph that I made, on October 11, 1995. Steve Johnson had asked me to help on his National Parks Project in Acadia. I borrowed a prototype DCS460 camera from the camera team at Kodak. Steve in addition to his 4x5 scanning back, had a monochrome DCS460, which I borrowed for this shot,
We did get some curious looks from amateur photographers who saw us walking around with about $100,000 in gear at that time. One photographer was bold to enough to walk up to us and ask, "Who are you guys?"
The 460 was highly sensitive to the red region of the spectrum, and without the IR filter the camera was essentially a IR camera. Biggest users of this camera, DEA, FBI, military, police, agriculture, apparently certain plants are easy to detect with IR. For example marijuana.

My adventure into the digital art world began in early 1984, shortly after purchasing my first computer, a Macintosh 128K. The Macintosh came with a copy of MacPaint, which I immediately began experimenting with. First with illustrations and in 1985, with the addition of a Thunderscan scanner, I began editing my own photos years before the term digital photography would become known. IMO, the computer is the most powerful creative tool yet conceived.
